HN 2.0 project update

We kicked off the "HN 2.0" project a few weeks ago. The project team met on Saturday to discuss progress. The team includes practitioners from Aberdeen, Anniesland, and Cardonald Colleges, and a representative from a university.

I had intended to keep you up to date with this project via the HN Review blog but I think that it is of wider interest than that, so I will "mainstream" it by using this blog for updates. I'm pretty sure that whatever we learn in the context of HNC Computing can be applied to other Computing qualifications.

There will be two main deliverables from this project: (1) a practical report on how centres can use social media for summative assessment within the new HNC Computing; and (2) an academic paper on our findings.

The report will include an audit of every unit in the new HNC Computing to gauge its suitability for using Web 2.0 technologies for [summative] assessment. We will suggest the sorts of social media that could be used. We will then use several case studies to explore in more detail how this could be done. We will stop short of writing new assessment examplars, but I hope that the report will be very clear about the sorts of approaches you could use to generate assessment evidence using social media.

We plan to carry out some primary research into your use of social media for teaching, learning and assessment, and that will form the basis of the academic paper, which (I hope) will be published later this year. We have already had some interest from academic journals.

We will carry out the research during May, carry out the audit and write the case studies between May and July, and write the report during August.
