All About Warranties

Three Year Warranty
Almost all of the rugged computers come standard with a 3 year warranty, while most commercial, plastic computers come standard with only a 1 year warranty. Not only does this save you a lot of money in case of a failure, but it also speaks to the quality that is built in to a rugged computer. If they were not extremely reliable, the rugged computer manufacturers could not afford to provide a 3 year warranty.

Extended and Expanded Warranties
Warranty extensions can be acquired to extend the warranty from three years to four years or five years. Also, some warranties can be upgraded to include "no-fault" warranties, on-site warranties, or 24 hour turnaround warranties. Extended warranties can also be acquired on major peripherals and docks which are not included in the computer's warranty, or are only warranteed for one year.

M230 vs M230N

Getac's fully rugged M230N is the replacement of the M230. The differences between these models are:

• Processor
• NVidia
• Hard Drive
• Optical Drive
• EVDO
• Touchpad

The M230N model comes with Core 2 Duo processor technology as opposed to the Core Duo processor of the old M230 model. There is still a touchscreen option available, but it is only for the 14" screen. Also an option for the 14" screen models is an upgrade to discrete video with Nvidia 256MB chip. The M230 model came standard with an 80GB hard drive. The M230N comes standard with a 120GB hard drive. Optional upgrades for the hard drive are a 160 or 250GB, or a spare 120GB hard drive w/ a canister. A DVD-Super Multi drive comes with the M230N. There is a choice between HSDPA or EVDO (Sprint) wireless communications for the M230N. Lastly, with the M230N there is an optional pressure sensing glove touchpad available.

Uses and Benefits of Rugged Computers

What is a Rugged Computer?

When it comes to rugged computers, there are 3 different degrees of rugged: Business Rugged, Semi-Rugged, and Fully Rugged. Business rugged computers are made for business travelers and students and can withstand the everyday bumps, bangs, and spills. They come with a magnesium alloy casing, shock mounted hard drive and spill proof keyboard. They are one step up from commercial plastic laptops (Dell, Apple, Toshiba, etc.). Semi-Rugged computers on the other hand can take a little more abuse than the business rugged laptops and can usually handle a 3 ft. drop. Fully rugged computers have all of the rugged features of a business rugged and semi rugged computer, plus they are fully sealed which means they can withstand rain, dust and moisture. Semi rugged and fully rugged computers are made for people who work in a mobile or field computing environment.

Who Uses Rugged Computers and Why?

Whether you work in the military, construction, public safety, building inspection, mining, oil and gas, utility, agribusiness, or field service, a rugged computer will meet your every need. Their rugged features allow them to withstand the conditions anywhere you may need to go and give you the ability to complete all the tasks that need to be done.

Rugged computers prove to be extremely beneficial in these fields because their magnesium alloy case makes them 20 times stronger than the plastic casing found on most laptops. Many rugged computers also have or come with an option found on most laptops. Many rugged computers also have or come with an option for sunlight viewable screens. This is great for people who work in an outside environment because it allows them to see the screen’s display no matter what. Their waterproof keyboards and screens stand up to any liquids these rugged computers may face; whether its rain, mud or a spilled drink, rugged computers can stand up to them with full functionality. Many of them now come with shock-mounted hard drives which can withstand vibrations and drops. Fully rugged computers also have sealed ports which protects the computer from dust and moisture. So whether you’re in an extreme environment or a business office, a rugged computer can prove to be beneficial to you. These computers can make you more efficient at your job with little to no downtime. Due to their ability to withstand tough conditions, you don’t have to worry about them breaking or crashing. Rugged Computer Testing

Rugged computers go through a number of tests to ensure that they meet certain qualifications. These tests can be done in the laboratory, in a natural environment (field testing), or a combination of the two. Rugged computers are typically tested for drops, humidity, low and high temperatures, vibration, dust-resistance, thermal shock, water-resistance, and altitude.

For the drop test the laptops are dropped onto each face, edge, and corner in non-operating mode. Following this test, the computers are checked to make sure they boot up properly. The vibration test is conducted in both operating and non-operating mode. The rugged computers are clamped onto an aluminum plate and endure different frequencies of shaking for a total of one hour. For the water test, the computers are turned on and left open with the port covers closed. The rugged laptops endure streams of water for a total of 15 minutes.

For the humidity test, the rugged computers go through 10 days of temperatures being cycled from 86 to 140 degrees Farenheight, with a relative humidity of 95%. They are checked to make sure they are still operating near the end of the 5^th and 10^th day. For the dust testing the laptops are blasted with dust/sand coming from different directions.

In the high temperature test the computes are subjected to 140 degree farenheight temperatures in operating mode and 160 degree Farenheight temperatures in non-operating mode. In the low temperature test the computers are subjected to -20 degree farenheight temperatures in operating mode and -60 degree farenheight temperatures in non-operating mode. In the thermal shock test, the rugged laptops go through three cycles of extremely high (205 degrees farenheight) to extremely low temperatures (-60 degrees farenheight). This test is performed with the computers in both operating and non-operating mode. The last and final test is the altitude test. The rugged computers are tested at an altitude level of 15,000 feet.
