Mobile Computing Comparison Shopping?

Did You Know You Can Compare Rugged Computers Side-By-Side?

Here, at Group Mobile, we feel it's important for our customers to be able to make the most educated decision possible when purchasing new products. We are also aware, with such a large variety of ruggedized products on the market, that it can be overwhelming at times determining which computer fits your situation best. Group Mobile's Rugged Computer Comparison Charts offer side-by-side specification comparisons of the brands and models we carry based on rugged rating and form factor.

Have a few you are interested in? Choose the appropriate category to view our product comparisons. We also have customer reviews, which can be helpful when choosing the computer that is best suitable for your needs. Visit the Product User Reviews page to gather more information for your next purchase.

If you have more specific questions or are not completely sure of which system works ideally with your goals, please contact one of our mobile computing specialists and they will be happy to assist you with whatever you may need.

Qualification Support Team

The Qualification Support Team (QST) for vocational Computing qualifications meets annually and the next meeting is coming up on 28 May.

The QST, as the name infers, is responsible for supporting qualifications. The members are drawn from colleges, schools and training providers. A key responsibility is to advise SQA about the materials needed to support new or existing awards. The meetings provide an opportunity for you to tell us what you need.

Another important job for the QST is to consider proposed changes to qualifications. During the year we receive many suggestions for changes (such as the addition of an optional unit to a qualification) and this body considers a number of such ideas. If the QST accepts a suggested change then my team impliment that change.

So, the QST is an important forum for many reasons. It gives practitioners a voice about the kinds of support you need and what qualifications look like. Contact Hilary if you want to know more about QSTs or want to volunteer to become a member.

E-learning material

Over the years, we have produced a range of e-learning material to support the IT awards at HN level. Most of the funding for this has came from ESF.

Although many of these developments were ad hoc, there are now sufficient units covered by online learning that entire group awards can now be delivered this way. The entire HNC Computing can now be delivered online; as can the new HNC Interactive Media; most of the HNC IT award is also covered; and some of the HNC Computer Networking. In total, 29 units are now supported by e-learning materials.

All of these materials will eventually appear on the SQA website but, for the moment, some are hosted elsewhere. In fact, three websites: here, here and here. Please contact Caroline for further information.

Speaking of e-learning, you may be interested in this paper on how e-learning effects teaching and learning.

HN 2.0 project update

We kicked off the "HN 2.0" project a few weeks ago. The project team met on Saturday to discuss progress. The team includes practitioners from Aberdeen, Anniesland, and Cardonald Colleges, and a representative from a university.

I had intended to keep you up to date with this project via the HN Review blog but I think that it is of wider interest than that, so I will "mainstream" it by using this blog for updates. I'm pretty sure that whatever we learn in the context of HNC Computing can be applied to other Computing qualifications.

There will be two main deliverables from this project: (1) a practical report on how centres can use social media for summative assessment within the new HNC Computing; and (2) an academic paper on our findings.

The report will include an audit of every unit in the new HNC Computing to gauge its suitability for using Web 2.0 technologies for [summative] assessment. We will suggest the sorts of social media that could be used. We will then use several case studies to explore in more detail how this could be done. We will stop short of writing new assessment examplars, but I hope that the report will be very clear about the sorts of approaches you could use to generate assessment evidence using social media.

We plan to carry out some primary research into your use of social media for teaching, learning and assessment, and that will form the basis of the academic paper, which (I hope) will be published later this year. We have already had some interest from academic journals.

We will carry out the research during May, carry out the audit and write the case studies between May and July, and write the report during August.

Contact Kenji Lamb for more information about this project.

Computer Games

I visited Forrester High School this morning to discuss qualifications in computer games.

A group of teachers, representing the school, college and university sectors, had been thinking about developing awards relating to computer games, and wanted to discuss their ideas with me.

It was a good meeting and their ideas were very interesting with lots of potential. The group proposed three new awards (National Progression Awards) at SCQF Levels 4, 5 and 6. I explained the process that has to be followed to turn ideas like this into real qualifications.

The first stage is to ensure that SQA has the capacity to support the development so I'll discuss this internally before deciding if/when to take this forward. But it sounds an interesting development, which I'm sure would be popular with schools and colleges.

We are currently developing a new HND in this area (HND Computer Games Development), which will include reviewing the existing HNC award (HNC Computer Games Development), so developing new awards at Levels 4, 5 and 6 would compliment these on-going developments.

Join our new online communities

As I posted earlier, Jiglu closes tomorrow. We are moving the online groups to a new service provider -- hosted by GroupSpaces. If you are currently a member of one of the Jiglu groups, you should have received an invitation to join one of the new groups. If not, please join the generic support group here, and we will take care of you. In fact, everyone should join this group since it is the main support group for all vocational Computing awards.

I look forward to seeing you on GroupSpaces!

HN Review - Unit Writing/Vetting Opportunities

As you are aware, we are currently consulting on the five group awards which are part of the HN Review (HNC Computing, HND Computing, HND Computing: Software Development, HND Computing: Technical Support and HND Computing: Networking).  If you have not yet had a chance to complete the online consultation survey, it can be accessed here.

Once all frameworks have been finalised we will be in a position to identify new units to be developed and also those requiring revision.

Given the high number of core and extended core QDT members, they will be involved heavily in the development work.  However, if you would like to be considered for unit writing and/or vetting then please contact me direct stating your area of expertise.  Should we require additional writers/vetters in addition to QDT members I shall be in touch with you direct.

All changes will be included in the next Update Letter to Centres.

Qualification Support Team for HN/PDA awards

There is a QST for non-advanced awards and one for advanced awards. Today was the turn of the advanced [HN] QST. Ten members attended a meeting in the Glasgow office, including a couple of new members. Most members are lecturers from FE colleges, across Scotland.

Like the NQ QST, the key activity is the discussion about the various suggestions from centres. We considered five QST proposal forms today. The QST is not a talk-shop. We take action and make changes to assessments or unit specifications or teaching materials when necessary. Some of the decisions made at today's meeting will result in concrete changes to units and assessments.

We do more than consider suggestions from centres. Today we also discussed SOLAR, Curriculum for Excellence, the current HN Review, and changes to the way we include vendor certification within HN awards. As always, the discussions were lively and constructive.

I told the HN members what I told the NQ members yesterday about the future of QSTs -- there will be no more face-to-face meetings. Future communication will be through an online community.

Contact Caroline if you want to know more about the QST for HN awards or enquire about membership.

The Xplore iX104C4 Rugged Mobile Tablet PC

The rugged tablet PCs from Xplore Technologies are able to hold up in even the most demanding conditions. Our customers have used these rugged tablets in coal mines, on heavy construction sites, on forklifts, at the north pole…you name it, and they can take a beating and keep on ticking (with apologies to Timex). The rubber bumpers that surround these tablet PCs are icing on the cake when combined with the tough magnesium casing of the unit itself. The iX104C4 and iX104C4 Lite are "ingress protection rated" at IP-65. This basically means that nothing from the outside is getting inside the tablet to cause problems. The only point of weakness, as is the case with most rugged computers, is the display screen itself. We have had a few come back for screen replacement after the computer was dropped and the display screen came in direct contact with a hard and sharp object. But even this calamity is somewhat mitigated by the hardened glass that Xplore uses in their rugged tablets.

Qualification Support Team meeting for NC/NPA awards

The Qualification Support Team (QST) for my non-advanced awards met this afternoon in the SQA offices in Glasgow. QSTs are charged with advising SQA about the support needs of our awards.

A key part of any QST meeting is consideration of proposals from centres, which can request improved assessments or revised unit specifications. We use two types of form: a QST proposal form, for such things as requesting changes to units, and an assessment feedback form, to ask us to revised assessments.

There was only one proposal today, perhaps reflecting the maturity and stability of this area, and this related to the Weblog unit, pointing out that some of the assessments were out of date. We agreed not only to look at the assessments but also the unit itself, in case we need to update both.

We had interesting discussions about a number of other topics. One worth mentioning is membership. We're looking for new members, so if you are interested in serving on this QST please contact Hilary.

I concluded the meeting by informing members about an important change in the way (all) QSTs will work in future. There will be no more face-to-face meetings. QSTs will, in future, be done online, through an online group. This will permit proposals to be considered on an on-going basis, rather than twice per year. Some members expressed regret at this change and suggested that we try to use social media (such as Skype) to keep the face-to-face aspect alive. I agreed to put some ideas together about how we can use ICT to communicate effectively.

Please contact Hilary if you want to know more about QSTs or want to submit a QST proposal form. QSTs are a great way to ensure that you receive the support that you need.

Criticism of ICT lessons

I received an e-mail yesterday, which contained a link to a story about boring ICT lessons in schools. SQA is working on new Computing qualifications as part of the Curriculum for Excellence, but there are already a large number of modern, engaging vocational qualifications available to centres. These include qualifications in Computer Games Development, Social Software, and Digital Culture.

I was disappointed to see the uptake figures for the Digital Culture units. These are available at SCQF Levels 4-8 but the uptake is very low, in spite of these units containing up-to-date and engaging outcomes relating to the more interesting aspects of ICT, such as social networks, collaboration tools, and virtual worlds, such as Second Life.

Contact Hilary for NC units, up to SCQF Level 6, and contact Caroline, for HN units at SCQF Levels 7 and up. These units are available now and are (optional) part of several NC and HN programmes.

Learning Through Technology conference

I attended, and presented at, the Learning Through Technology conference yesterday, which was part of Holyrood Conference programme, held at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh.

The keynote was given by the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Mike Russell, who gave an interesting talk about the importance of technology in education. He talked about the new version of GLOW, recognising that it needs "to move on", and to be "more attractive, more open, easier to use, and more enjoyable". He also spoke about the use of personal technology in schools and colleges and how the current position, where it is generally prohibited, is "artificial" and unsustainable. He acknowledged the need for security in schools and colleges and councils, but this "had to be proportionate".

John McCann, of Scotland's Colleges, also spoke about the need to modernise teaching and learning. He said that the focus should move away from institutions towards "learning communities". He gave a lot of examples of how teaching and learning had changed in colleges, but finished his talk by pointing out that the one area where practice had not changed much was assessment. He concluded by asking for this to become the focus of attention in future.

Me and a colleague, Graeme Clark, delivered two breakout sessions, which were attended by around 100 people in total.
I spoke about how SQA had modernised its ICT qualifications, and Graeme spoke about the digital resources available to centres, particularly SQA Academy and SOLAR. I also talked about the need to modernise assessment, but acknowledged some of the barriers to change.

Contact Graeme if you want to know more about SQA Academy or SOLAR, or contact me if you want to know more about ICT awards. You can download my paper on modernising assessment here.

PC Passport review 2013 - survey

As you may know a Qualification Design Team has been set up to carry out a revision of PC Passport at SCQF levels 4, 5 and 6.

The QDT has proposed a new structure and Outcomes for the new awards and we are in the process of consulting with practitioners and stakeholders in the sector to find out what they think of the proposals.

If you wish to have a say in how the new qualifications are shaped please help by completing the survey:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QSB8QDG

Some members of the QDT will also be carrying out telephone interviews.  If you are willing to be interviewed about PC Passport and its replacement please e-mail me in the first instance.

Writing objective tests

I get frequent requests for my Guide to Writing Objective Tests from centres (and individuals) who are tasked with creating a test (usually for online delivery). Many of the new awards in my portfolio using multiple choice questions and the Guide is a good source of advice on writing this type of question.

The latest version of the Guide is maintained on Scrib and can be downloaded from that site (in various formats including PDF and Word).

HNC/D Computer Games Development

The HNC & HND Computer Games Development awards are validated and available to centres. The Arrangements Document is available from the SQA website and can be downloaded here.

The Group Award codes are:

G9NX 15 HNC Computer Games Development
G9NY 16 HND Computer Games Development

The Unit Specifications are available for download from the HN Unit Search facility on the SQA website.

We plan to produce Assessment Exemplars for a number of the new Units within the award - the writing process for this is due to commence early May 2010.

There will be a Launch Event for these awards which will take place in June 2010 - more information (confirmed date, time, venue, online registration) relating to this event to follow.

If you have any queries relating to the new awards, please do not hestiate to contact me direct.

Big data

I've received a few enquiries from centres about SQA qualifications in the area of big data. A centre proposed a new PDA in this field and I am taking that forward with the representative through SQA's normal procedures (which commences with an Ideas Capture Form).

We also plan to develop a couple of generic Higher National Units in this area. These will be called Big Data (at SCQF Level 7) and Data Science (at SCQF Level 8). The Big Data unit would be very generic and suitable for a wide range of Higher National awards, including HNC Computing, but the Data Science unit would be more specialised and suitable for STEM awards (such as HND Computer Science).

The Units will be ready for June. I'll keep you posted about the proposed PDA. Contact Caroline for more information or to see draft versions of the units as they are developed.
